Reports on homelessness in Finland

The data on homelessness is based on the annual housing market survey prepared by ARA — the Housing Finance and Development Centre of Finland. Reports address developments in homelessness by making comparisons with figures from the previous year. The data is collected from municipalities at the end of each year. Collected data reflects the situation in the past year up until November 15th. Homelessness has been monitored since 1987, when the number of homeless people in Finland stood at over 16,000.

 

Homeless people 2023 2024-03-08
There were over 3,400 single homeless individuals in Finland in 2023. Approximately 30% of them were long-term homeless. The number of homeless individuals decreased by about 260 people from the previous year, with long-term homeless individuals contributing to a decrease of 115.

At the end of 2022, there were 3,686 homeless people living alone in Finland, which is 262 less than in 2021. The number of the long-term homeless was 1,133, which marks a decrease of 185 people. This information is based on data collected from municipalities by the Housing Finance and Development Centre of Finland (ARA).

At the end of 2016 there were around 6,650 homeless people living alone in Finland. The number of long-term homeless people was 2,050. There were 325 homeless families, while there had been 420 of them a year ago. When including families, homelessness fell by 500 people during the year.

At the end of 2015 there were 6,785 homeless people, who lived alone, and 424 homeless families. There were a total of 7,898 homeless individuals. The number of homeless, who lived alone, decreased from the previous year by 322 individuals and the number of long-term homeless by 191 individuals. The number of homeless families remained approximately the same.

According to the housing market survey conducted by ARA at the end of 2014, there were a total of 8,316 homeless people living in Finland. There was a fall in the number of homeless people from the previous year (-368). The number of homeless people living alone fell by 354 persons, but there were 10 more homeless families than in the previous year.
